Imprints, Magazines and Other Publishers

Roy Kuhlman worked for Barney Rosset and Grove Press for twenty years (1951 - 1971). There can be little doubt as to the magnitude and importance of the work he created there (some 700 titles), but Kuhlman created cover art for other publishers, magazines.

Click "Various Publishers / Magazines" to view work by Kuhlman for such publishing houses as: Penguin, Viking Press (where he worked with fellow Grove associate Richard Seaver), Random House, Harper, Simon & Schuster, Collier Books, Carlyle (a series of mystery prints) Saturday Review Press and several others. There are also a couple of Esquire and Newsweek covers.

The remainder of the sections house Grove Press Imprints: "Black Cat' / "Profile Books" Pilot Books" and the underground magazine that Rosset founded with Donald Keene, "Evergreen Review".  The "pulp erotic" imprints have their own section (click on the menu above under "Erotic Pulp Imprints" for those sets.

Click on "Black Cat Titles" to view the mass-paperback sister publication to the Evergreen Original series and a beautiful, important set of titles in their own right. Kuhlman did not design all of covers for the "Evergreen Review" titles, but he did design the original template, as he did likewise for the "Profile and Pilot" titles.
